Jabez’ Answered Prayer

“…So God gave him what he requested” – 1 Chronicles 4:10 (NKJV)

The circumstances of his birth could not have been more dire for Jabez. He had been born into trouble, with his mother in distress and sorrow. We have no information on his father. Now he was carrying a name that no one would be proud of. We do not know of him changing his name. Instead, he chose to turn his circumstances around for his own good.

My brothers, this young man behaved himself wisely and honourably and sought to please God even as he was born into adversity. When we honour God and do His will, we can ask anything of Him and be assured He will do it.

Jesus himself told the disciples. “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” – John. 15:7 (NKJV). Jabez learnt how to abide in God and keep His commandments.

Jabez knew what he wanted and asked for it. Although his name meant pain, he did not want to cause pain. He wanted God’s blessing. He wanted God’s favour on his life and his possessions. He wanted to do good and not evil. God granted him what he requested.

What do you want God to do for you? Is it a change in attitude or a bad habit you seem unable to shake off? Is it a stronghold of sin that needs to be broken? Or a relationship issue that you are afraid to address? More than any earthly parent, our heavenly Father wants to do us good. His love for us knows no bounds, and He will move mountains literally, if necessary, to help you. Have you asked Him? Why not do so today?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You that Your ear is not heavy, neither is Your hand short. You hear me even before I ask. You know my needs, and You are eager to help me whenever I come to You. I yield my life to You now and say, Lord, have Your way in me. Amen
